We’ve been a little bit obsessed with the perplexing yet beautiful abstract photography of rising art star Jack Hardwicke. And we’re not the only ones - he’s been recently interviewed by the Creator’s Project and Bizarre Beyond Belief, an online magazine. Despite the fact he’s been busy with his latest show at Fishing Quarter Gallery in Brighton (now through Nov 13) and the release of three limited editions of his photographs on Artspace, he still managed to take a moment of his time to share with us just a few of the many things that are currently inspiring him.

5 things:

  1. Michael Chase’s abstract artwork (top left)
  2. Lucid Dreams (bottom left)
  3. Music, especially that of Grimes and Lone (center and top right)
  4. Under the Glass Eye by Peter Hirst (not pictured)
  5. The Tree of Life by Terrence Malick (bottom right)
After the jump, Hardwicke explains each of his 5 things, so please read on!

The fourth and final round of the Next Artspace Artist showcases three works, each with a slightly more feminine side than past rounds. From the pink haired beauty in Rebekah Campbell’s photograph to the direct gaze of Holly Sharpe’s illustrated portrait and the profile view of a woman in Allen Chiu’s slightly surreal image, each work represents a new perspective on the female figure. These contenders, along with the semi-finalists from past rounds will move into the Semi-Finals starting on Monday on Artspace.com! Follow along here to keep tabs on your favorite contestants and to get details on how to vote in the final rounds.

ROUND 4 SEMI-FINALIST: REBEKAH CAMPBELL

Raised in a small town in Oklahoma and the youngest of 4 siblings, Rebekah Campbell grew up surrounded by art and with a pencil in her hand from a young age. She finds inspiration in the works of photography greats like Irving Penn and Francesca Woodman as well as the more ephemeral materials that surround her day-to-day life in her current locale of Savannah, GA.

What do you hope other people get out of your art? I want others to feel something when they look at my photos, at times a sense of wonder, or beauty. Anything at all.

Where do you look for inspiration? How do you get your creative juices flowing? Every place I can find. I look through old issues of fashion magazines, the internet, art books, my friends that I am always with, and lots of films. Once I get an image in my mind, I try to find inspiration in things surrounding it, inspiration can be found anywhere if you look hard enough.

What would you be doing if you weren’t an artist? I’d love to have my own traveling TV show. That’s a stretch though.

Who is your favorite artist (living or historical)? I have so many. Irving Penn, Yelena Yemchuk, Corinne Day, Francesca Woodman, David Armstrong, Ryan McGinley, Laura Letinsky, Nan Goldin, Tim Barber, Deborah Turbeville, Paolo Roversi, Cass Bird, Monet, Van Gogh, and Max Kurzweil.

What is your favorite place to see art? I love galleries, small ones and huge ones. Art in classrooms is where a lot of it begins, though.

If you could get any artist to do your portrait, who would you choose? Tim Walker. He is divine with portraiture.

CHECK BACK HERE ON MONDAY, OCTOBER 1 FOR INFORMATION ON HOW TO VOTE IN THE FINAL ROUNDS.

ROUND 4 SEMI-FINALIST: ALLEN CHIU

Though initially interested in drawing and creating imagery using a graphing calculator (as a pastime during a horrible math class), Allen Chiu eventually switched over to photography in order to impress a girl. Now he looks at the oddities of society and uses his wry sense of humor to make fun of the world.

What do you hope other people get out of your art? Ideally, they would find humor layered in it. If not, hopefully at least they see the beauty of light.

What would you be doing if you weren’t an artist? I originally wanted to be a hot dog stand owner when I was a little kid so perhaps that?

What is indispensable in your studio? Spray fixative, I just like smelling it.

Who is your favorite artist (living or historical)? Doyald Young who sadly passed away last year. My favorite artists that I know personally would probably be Paul Soady, Nicole Wu, and Shane Hughes. It’s really hard to pick just a few though because there are so many people that inspire me.

What is your favorite place to see art? I love to see art where I don’t expect it. Unexpectedly finding something beautiful is a great feeling.

If you could get any artist to do your portrait, who would you choose? I’d go back in time and get Velázquez to do a badass painting of me

ROUND 4 SEMI-FINALIST: HOLLY SHARPE

Currently a nomad (she grew up in Scotland, last lived in London, but is now traveling around the US and Canada without a permanent address), Holly Sharpe always dreamed of becoming an artist. Encouraged by family and friends, influenced by music, new places, people, and different cultures, she hopes her art and lifestyle can serve as an inspiration for others to follow their own dreams.

What’s your favorite thing you’ve ever made? Honestly, this changes all the time, I get slightly obsessed with some work and go back and forth between loving it and hating it. Usually my most recent work will be my favorite. So right now I am still in love with my latest painting/illustration ‘Lost’.

What would you be doing if you weren’t an artist? I love meeting new people and will never tire of it. So if I wasn’t an artist I would love to be working with people and helping them in some way.

Where do you look for inspiration? How do you get your creative juices flowing? I look everywhere for inspiration. Music helps a lot, other artists of course and reading about new places, people and cultures. Once this has sparked an idea, I guess I tend to look inwards to get the creative juices flowing, I usually visualise ideas in my head and let myself get lost in them.

Who is your favorite artist (living or historical)? Another tough question, but if I had to pick one, I think I would have to say Egon Schiele.

What is your favorite place to see art? Any big art gallery, I love the open, bright and calm spaces that they are.

If you could get any artist to do your portrait, who would you choose? Emmmmm, Conrad Roset!

Symbolic Gestures Say More Than Words (Ultrachrome print of collage and flower petals, 17.25" x 30")

“My recent work focuses on the inevitable flatness of recorded history in relation to the deeply personal, nuanced, and emotional human experience.  The early 1960‘s LIFE images that make up these collages were taken in a specific moment with a journalistic approach.  They illustrated the events and people of our world by contributing to the constructed context of the LIFE World Library.  In my work I remove them from that context and re-assemble the disparate images to reveal a new narrative.  The objects placed on top of the collages add to the sense of story and implied meaning.  They are aesthetically chosen to act as an extension of the flat image and create a subtly emotional read based more on feeling than understanding.  The images and objects begin to inform each other to depict a history that is metaphorical, fantastical, and completely open to interpretation.” - Kristine Zingeler. “The photographs I make are a response to the visual culture around me and trying to make sense of it. I often lay the scrap photos out on the table and arrange them like specimens to be examined. I come from a background in painting and art photography and examining the minuet details of a place are particularly important to me. These cuts and pieces act out simple narratives and call into questions what entices us into the picture plane.” - Trey Wright. Learn more about the artist here.

“This piece, "Untitled #412” is about making choices. I created this during the period of time in my life when I didn’t know what to do. I had gone to RISD for a summer program and I met Jenny there, now one of my closest friends. She was going through similar hardships in pursuit of a career in art, something we both shared a passion for. The empty chairs represent people that aren’t there, and her standing on top of the center one is her choice, her overcoming of her fears.“ - Allen Chiu. Learn more about the artist here.

Pop-upView Separately

“The ‘High-Rise’ series are photographs of models depicting an anti-utopian urban environment, assembled from distorted elements of residential and industrial architecture and structures found in the cityscapes of London and New York.

They portray a run-down and badly maintained collection of structures that are slightly contrived and unusual, but still perfectly possible in today’s urban scene. Unfinished construction sites and decaying socialist council flats both displaying their internal networks of inter connecting balconies and open walk ways and staircases. The monumental bridges create undesirable underworlds and the elevated motorways crammed in next to residential neighborhoods show that quality of life and personal space had been overridden with the need for development. A transient history of a bustling and fast paced home to industry and commerce and a dense, over crowded population, now seemingly void of human habitation, possibly due to decline, disintegration or abandonment.

Although the subject is bleak, I don’t necessarily want the focus to be negative or political, instead I want the landscapes to show an exciting playground for exploration, and the discovery of remains and traces, without law or restriction.

Not being satisfied with just the format of a photograph, 'High-Rise’ is a physical constructive process of carefully selected buildings from an environment that I interact with everyday. The exploration at this manageable scale is a way of adjusting and familiarising myself with an environment, placing together components piece by piece developing a physical cityscape that I can relate to.

This series of work is displayed as photographs, but the reality of the three-dimensional model and it’s cardboard edges and joins are left deliberately unaltered with the intention of being discovered on close inspection by the viewer.” -Nick Sellek. Learn more about the artist here.
